What is a stock split?

A stock split increases the number of shares each existing investor holds by dividing each share into multiple new shares, while reducing the per-share price proportionally. In a 3-for-1 forward split, every share becomes three new shares and the per-share price is divided by three. The company's total market capitalization, the holder's aggregate position value, and the holder's ownership percentage are unchanged by the split itself — only the unit of denomination changes.

Forward splits are most often executed by large-cap companies whose share price has risen high enough that the headline number becomes a friction point for retail buyers (e.g. Apple's 4-for-1 split in 2020 at ~$500, Nvidia's 10-for-1 split in 2024 at ~$1,200). The mechanical effect is purely re-denomination; the post-split market reaction is its own thing and typically modest.

What is a reverse stock split?

A reverse stock split reduces the share count by combining multiple existing shares into one new share, with the per-share price increasing proportionally. A 1-for-10 reverse split turns ten old shares into one new share at ten times the prior price. Like a forward split, the reverse split is a re-denomination — market cap, total position value, and ownership percentage are unchanged at the moment of the split.

The dominant driver of reverse splits on US exchanges is continued-listing bid-price compliance. Both Nasdaq and NYSE require listed common stock to maintain a closing bid above $1. After a sustained drop below the threshold, the exchange issues a deficiency notice with a cure period — typically 180 days, extendable in some cases. A reverse split is the fastest mechanical way to lift the bid back above $1 without needing operating-performance recovery. As a result, the majority of US reverse splits are filed by micro-cap and small-cap issuers; large-cap reverse splits are rare and usually signal a major capital-structure or spinoff event.

Ratio mechanics and ex-date vs. effective date

The split ratio is the most important field on this page. A 3-for-1 forward split means every one share becomes three. A 1-for-10 reverse split means every ten shares become one. Wiseek normalizes ratios to a standard "X-for-Y" form; non-standard or fractional ratios are flagged with "(approx)" so traders can verify against the filing.

Two dates matter: the record date is the cutoff that determines which holders are entitled to the split, and the effective date (also called the ex-split date) is the trading day on which the security trades at the new post-split price and the new share count is reflected in brokerage accounts. The dates shown in the tables above are effective dates. Some exchanges also publish a separate "payable date" which is operationally similar to the effective date for splits but may differ for stock dividends.

Frequently asked questions

How does a split affect my brokerage account?

Brokers automatically adjust share counts and cost basis on the effective date — no action is required from the investor. Open limit orders and stop orders are typically cancelled around the split and must be re-entered at the post-split price. Fractional shares resulting from a reverse split are usually cashed out at the closing price on the effective date, since most US brokers do not hold fractional shares of all securities.

Does a stock split change a company's market capitalization?

No. A split is purely a re-denomination of existing equity. Market cap equals share price multiplied by shares outstanding, and a split changes both proportionally and in opposite directions, leaving the product unchanged. Subsequent market reaction can move the price, but the split itself is mechanically value-neutral.

Why do so many small companies do reverse splits?

The single largest driver is exchange listing compliance. Nasdaq and NYSE both require listed common stock to maintain a closing bid above $1. After a sustained drop below that threshold, exchanges issue a deficiency notice with a cure period (typically 180 days, extendable). A reverse split is the fastest mechanical way to lift the bid price back above $1 without needing to drive operating performance. As a result, the great majority of reverse splits on US markets come from small-cap and micro-cap issuers managing listing compliance rather than large-cap companies.

Is a forward split a buy signal?

Splits are not earnings events and do not change fundamentals. Some academic studies have found small post-split outperformance for large-cap forward splits, attributed to signaling (management confidence) and retail accessibility (lower per-share price), but the effect is modest and not robust across periods. Wiseek does not treat splits as standalone trading signals; they appear in this calendar as an informational data point and link out to each ticker's filings page for context.

About this data

Split records are extracted from SEC filings and corporate disclosures as they are processed by Wiseek's ingestion pipeline. The calendar above covers US-listed common stock on Nasdaq, NYSE, and AMEX. For each ticker we publish the split type, ratio, effective date, and a link to the company's full filings history.
