SuRo Capital Corp. is an internally managed, non-diversified closed-end management investment company that operates as a business development company (BDC). Formed in September 2010, the company commenced development stage activities on January 6, 2011, and began investment operations in the second quarter of 2011 following its initial public offering in May 2011. The company changed its name to SuRo Capital Corp. from Sutter Rock Capital Corp. on June 22, 2020, and previously from GSV Capital Corp. Its operating structure was internalized on March 12, 2019, to align stockholder and management interests. SuRo Capital's investment objective is to maximize total return, primarily through capital gains from equity and equity-related investments, and secondarily from income from debt investments. The company principally invests in equity securities of rapidly growing venture capital-backed emerging companies. Investments are acquired through direct investments in portfolio companies, secondary marketplaces for private companies, negotiations with selling stockholders, or via investment funds or special purpose vehicles (SPVs) established to invest in a single private issuer.
