SCI Engineered Materials, Inc. is an Ohio corporation incorporated in 1987, operating as a global supplier and manufacturer of advanced materials for Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) thin film applications. The company focuses on markets within the PVD industry, including Aerospace, Automotive, Defense, Glass, Optical Coatings, and Solar. Substantially all revenues are generated from customers with multinational operations. SCI develops innovative customized solutions by collaborating with end users and Original Equipment Manufacturers. The company was founded in 1987 by Dr. Edward Funk and Ingeborg Funk. Its initial product was a 99.999% pure, co-precipitated YBCO 1-2-3 powder, a High Temperature Superconductivity (HTS) material. Over the years, the product line expanded to include other High T c Powders, sintered shapes, single crystal substrates, and non-superconducting sputtering targets. While not currently pursuing the HTS market, this early development formed the foundation of its material science experience. In 1991, SCI established Target Materials Inc. (TMI) to meet the growing global demand for sputtering and laser ablation targets. This expanded its offerings to include a wide selection of metals, ceramics, and alloys for sputtering targets, evaporation sources, and other PVD applications, serving the Research and Development, Industrial, and Decorative Coating markets. During this period, the company began manufacturing targets for the photovoltaic, flat panel display, and semiconductor industries. SCI and TMI merged in 2002. The company continued to manufacture complex ceramic, metal, and alloy products for the photonic, photovoltaic, media storage, flat panel display, and semiconductor industries. In 2007, the company changed its name from Superconductive Components, Inc. to SCI Engineered Materials, Inc. to reflect its broader market focus. In January 2017, SCI received ISO 9001:2015 registration.
