QuantumScape develops next-generation solid-state lithium-metal battery technology for electric vehicles (EVs) and other applications. Founded in 2010, the company focuses on revolutionizing energy storage. QuantumScape's proprietary solid-state battery technology aims to provide greater energy density, faster charging, and enhanced safety compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. The company believes its lithium-metal battery technology can achieve automotive power rates with acceptable battery cycle life at approximately 3 to 4 atmospheres of pressure. Since 2012, QuantumScape has partnered with Volkswagen Group of America Investments, LLC and its affiliates, collectively "Volkswagen," which has invested approximately $380 million. Volkswagen has tested multiple generations of QuantumScape's single-layer and multilayer prototype cells at automotive power rates. In July 2024, QuantumScape entered into a Collaboration Agreement with PowerCo SE, a wholly-owned Volkswagen battery cell company, to industrialize QuantumScape's technology based on QSE-5.
