Prospect Capital Corporation is a financial services company that primarily lends to and invests in middle market privately-held companies. Incorporated in Maryland, the company is a closed-end investment company that has elected to be regulated as a business development company ("BDC") under the Investment Company Act of 1940 and as a regulated investment company ("RIC") under Subchapter M of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. While most investments are in private U.S. companies, the company may also invest in broadly-traded public companies and non-U.S. companies, subject to BDC requirements to invest at least 70% of assets in "eligible portfolio companies."
