Founded in 1947, the company is headquartered in Houston, Texas. Its wholly owned major subsidiaries include Powell Electrical Systems, Inc.; Powell Canada, Inc.; Powell (UK) Limited; and Powell Industries International Limited. Powell Industries primarily serves the oil and gas and petrochemical markets, the electric utility market, and commercial and other industrial markets. The company also provides products and services to the light rail traction power market, universities, and government entities. It is expanding into electrical markets through original equipment manufacturers and distribution channels. On August 15, 2025, Powell Industries acquired Remsdaq Limited, a U.K.-based manufacturer of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) for electrical substation control and automation in generation, transmission, and distribution. The total consideration for this acquisition was £13.6 million Pounds Sterling, or $18.4 million, including cash acquired.
