The company is a provider of defined contribution plans, nonqualified plans, defined benefit plans, and pension risk transfer services, and an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) consultant. PFG is also a provider of specialty benefits and insurance solutions for business owners and their employees, targeting small and medium-sized businesses. The company organizes its businesses into three reportable segments: Retirement and Income Solutions; Principal Asset Management; and Benefits and Protection. A Corporate segment includes assets and activities not allocated to other segments. The Retirement and Income Solutions segment's U.S. asset accumulation activities began in the 1940s with pension plan products and services.
