SemiLEDs Corp

SemiLEDs Corp develops, manufactures, and sells light emitting diode (LED) chips, LED components, LED modules, and systems. These products are used in general lighting and specialty industrial applications such as ultraviolet (UV) curing of polymers, LED light therapy in medical/cosmetic applications, counterfeit detection, germicidal and viricidal devices, LED lighting for horticulture, architectural lighting, and entertainment lighting. The manufacturing process begins with epitaxial growth, where several thin semiconductive crystalline layers of gallium nitride (GaN) are grown on a sapphire wafer. A reflective silver layer is then deposited, followed by a copper alloy layer. After the sapphire substrate is removed, this multi-layered material is processed into individual vertical LED chips. SemiLEDs Corp packages these chips into LED components, which are sold to distributors and customers primarily in India, Japan, the Netherlands, and the United States. The company also sells its "Enhanced Vertical" (EV) LED product series in blue, white, green, and UV in selected markets. LED chips are sold to packagers or distributors who then sell to packagers. Lighting product customers are mainly original design manufacturers (ODMs) of lighting products and end-users of lighting devices. SemiLEDs Corp also contracts other manufacturers for certain LED products and aspects of fabrication, assembly, and packaging, based on its design, technology requirements, quality control specifications, and final inspection.
