Koppers Holdings Inc. is a leading integrated global provider of treated wood products, wood preservation chemicals, and carbon compounds. The company's products and services are used in niche applications across various end-markets, including the railroad, specialty chemical, utility, residential lumber, agriculture, aluminum, steel, rubber, and construction industries. Koppers serves customers through a global manufacturing and distribution network with capabilities in North America, South America, Australasia, and Europe. Koppers operates through three principal business segments: Railroad and Utility Products and Services (RUPS), Performance Chemicals (PC), and Carbon Materials and Chemicals (CMC). The RUPS business is the largest supplier of railroad crossties to Class I railroads in North America and the second largest producer of utility poles in the United States. The CMC business is the largest global supplier of creosote to the North American railroad industry. The PC business is a global leader in developing, manufacturing, and marketing wood preservation chemicals and wood treatment technologies for pressure treating lumber in residential, industrial, and agricultural applications. The RUPS and CMC operations are, to a substantial extent, vertically integrated. Koppers Holdings Inc. was incorporated in November 2004 as a holding company for Koppers Inc., its wholly-owned subsidiary, and has substantially no independent operations.
