Kansas City Life Insurance Company (Kansas City Life) was incorporated in 1895 and adopted its current name in 1900, reorganizing as a stock life insurance company in 1903. Kansas City Life operates in 48 states and the District of Columbia. The company is the parent of two wholly-owned life insurance subsidiaries: Sunset Life Insurance Company of America (Sunset Life) and Old American Insurance Company (Old American). Sunset Life, acquired in 1974, was organized in 1937 and previously focused on the western United States. Its sales force was integrated into Kansas City Life's in 2006, and its operations are now consolidated with the parent company. Sunset Life maintains its existing block of business but does not solicit new sales. Its individual insurance products include traditional life, immediate annuity, universal life, and fixed deferred annuity products. Sunset Life operates in 43 states and the District of Columbia. Old American, acquired in 1991, was organized in 1939. It sells final expense traditional life insurance products, primarily to the senior market, and also offers a term product for younger individuals. Kansas City Life also owns Sunset Financial Services (SFS), a wholesale broker-dealer that helps distribute and market Kansas City Life's proprietary variable life and variable annuity products through third-party broker-dealers. SFS also services closed blocks of variable insurance business retained by the Company. The company also has several non-insurance subsidiaries that are not individually or collectively material.
