We are a biopharmaceutical company that uses our own technologies to find, develop, and sell new, powerful, and specific drugs that block the complement activation factor called C5a and its receptor C5aR. The complement system is a key part of the body's natural immune system, protecting it by identifying and removing harmful agents like bacteria and viruses. When the complement system is fully activated, C5 is broken down, releasing C5a, which then acts through its receptor C5aR. This full activation can also happen directly through natural enzymes in the body that are not part of the complement system. Our drug candidates, vilobelimab and izicopan (previously known as INF904), are designed to target C5a and its receptor C5aR. This allows us to specifically stop the strong inflammatory response seen in many autoimmune and other inflammatory diseases, which is triggered by C5a/C5aR activation. The complement system's main job is to help the body fight invading microorganisms by quickly creating inflammation and producing factors that kill pathogens and bring immune cells to infected areas. Activating the complement system ultimately produces C5a and C5b from complement factor C5. C5a, by binding to the C5a receptor C5aR1, creates an inflammatory environment by attracting and strongly activating neutrophils and by causing various cell types to produce molecules that promote inflammation. The C5a/C5aR1 signaling pathway is central to this process and a critical part of the innate immune system. While these inflammatory responses normally help fight infection, too much or uncontrolled C5a, as seen in certain diseases, can severely damage the body's own tissues, contributing to many autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
