First Citizens BancShares, Inc. is a financial holding company incorporated in Delaware on August 7, 1986. Its primary banking subsidiary, First-Citizens Bank & Trust Company (FCB), began as the Bank of Smithfield in Smithfield, North Carolina, in 1898. The company has grown through opening new branches and acquiring other businesses. As of December 31, 2025, First Citizens BancShares operates a large network of branches and offices mainly in the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and Western United States. It offers a wide array of financial services to individuals, businesses, and professionals. As of December 31, 2025, the company had total consolidated assets of $229.70 billion. The operations of First Citizens BancShares have been significantly influenced by descendants of Robert P. Holding, who gained control of FCB in the 1920s. Robert P. Holding's children and grandchildren have held positions on the Boards of Directors, as chief executive officers, and in other executive management roles. Since the company's formation in 1986, they have remained significant stockholders. Frank B. Holding, Jr., Robert P. Holding's grandson, serves as Chairman of the Boards and Chief Executive Officer. Hope Holding Bryant, Robert P. Holding's granddaughter, is Vice Chairwoman of the Boards. Peter M. Bristow, President and a member of the Boards, is the brother-in-law of Frank B. Holding, Jr. and Hope Holding Bryant. The company provides deposit products, loans, and wealth management and private banking services to consumer clients. For small and middle-market companies across various industries, it offers lending, leasing, capital markets, and other financial and advisory services.
