Extra Space Storage Inc. is a real estate investment trust (REIT) that operates in the self-storage business. Formed as a Maryland corporation on April 30, 2004, the company closed its initial public offering on August 17, 2004, and its common stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "EXR." The company continues the self-storage business that Extra Space Storage LLC and its subsidiaries had engaged in since 1977. Substantially all business is conducted through Extra Space Storage LP, the Operating Partnership, with Extra Space Storage Inc.'s primary assets being general partner and limited partner interests in this partnership. The company has elected to be taxed as a REIT under the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended. Extra Space Storage Inc. owns, operates, manages, provides lending for, acquires, develops, and redevelops self-storage properties, referred to as "stores."
