Dollar General Corporation is the largest discount retailer in the United States by number of stores. As of February 27, 2026, the company operates 20,959 stores across 48 U.S. states and Mexico, with the highest concentration in the southern, southwestern, midwestern, and eastern United States. Its first stores in Mexico opened in 2023. Dollar General offers a wide range of merchandise, including consumable items, seasonal items, home products, and apparel. The selection features both national brands from leading manufacturers and the company's own private brand selections, which are priced at significant discounts compared to national brands. These products are sold at everyday low prices, typically $10 or less, in convenient small-box store locations. The company was founded in 1939 by J.L. Turner as J.L. Turner and Son, Wholesale. It was incorporated in 1955 as J.L. Turner & Son, Inc., opening its first Dollar General store that year. The name changed to Dollar General Corporation in 1968, and the company reincorporated as a Tennessee corporation in 1998. Its common stock was publicly traded from 1968 until July 2007, and again from November 2009 on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "DG".
