Clearwater Paper is a leading manufacturer and supplier of Solid Bleached Sulfate (SBS) paperboard packaging products, serving independent converters across North America. The North American paperboard market is approximately 10 million tons and includes three main substrates: SBS, Coated Unbleached Kraft (CUK), and Coated Recycled Board (CRB). SBS makes up nearly fifty percent of this market. The company's paperboard products are sustainable, renewable, and recyclable, and are converted and printed by independent converters for use primarily in folding carton and food service applications. Clearwater Paper also sells minor amounts of pulp to outside customers. The company develops new products and solutions to expand and diversify its paperboard portfolio. As an independent, non-integrated supplier, all of its manufacturing facilities and assets are located within the continental United States. Clearwater Paper believes it is one of the five largest producers of paperboard in North America, with approximately 11% of the available production capacity in 2025. It also offers custom sheeting and slitting of paperboard products. In May 2024, Clearwater Paper acquired a paperboard manufacturing facility and associated business in Augusta, Georgia, from Graphic Packaging International, LLC for $700 million plus an adjustment for wood inventory and other assets, totaling approximately $710.6 million. This acquisition was part of two significant transactions in 2024 that focused the company's strategy exclusively on the paperboard packaging sector.
