Clearside Biomedical is a biopharmaceutical company focused on revolutionizing the delivery of therapies to the back of the eye through the suprachoroidal space, or SCS. The company's SCS injection platform, utilizing its proprietary SCS Microinjector, enables an in-office, repeatable, non-surgical procedure for the targeted and compartmentalized delivery of a wide variety of therapies to the macula, retina, or choroid. This platform can be used with existing drugs designed for SCS delivery, novel therapies, and future therapeutic innovations. Clearside Biomedical is building an internal research and development pipeline targeting retinal diseases and forming external collaborations. The company develops its own pipeline of small molecule product candidates for administration via its SCS Microinjector and partners with companies developing other ophthalmic therapeutic innovations for administration using its SCS injection technology. Clearside Biomedical's first product, XIPERE (triamcinolone acetonide injectable suspension) for suprachoroidal use, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2021. XIPERE is the first approved therapeutic delivered into the SCS, the first commercial product developed by Clearside Biomedical, and the first therapy for macular edema associated with uveitis. The suprachoroidal injection platform is a novel, patented approach for delivering pharmacotherapy to the back of the eye via the SCS. The proprietary SCS microinjector precisely administers drugs into the SCS using a needle approximately one millimeter in length.
