Clean Energy Fuels Corp. is a renewable energy company that procures and distributes renewable natural gas (RNG) and conventional natural gas, in the form of compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG), for the U.S. and Canadian transportation markets. RNG is produced by recovering and processing waste methane (biogas) from non-fossil fuel sources like dairy and other livestock waste and landfills. This RNG is then delivered as either CNG or LNG, serving as a replacement for fossil-based transportation fuels. Methane is a greenhouse gas with a global warming impact approximately 28 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. The company focuses on developing, owning, and operating dairy RNG projects and supplying RNG, currently sourced from third parties, to customers in the heavy and medium-duty commercial transportation sectors. Clean Energy has been involved in the alternative vehicle fuels industry for over 28 years. The company also sells bulk natural gas as LNG and CNG to various customers, including marine cargo ships, space aircraft, and large paper mills. Clean Energy believes it was the first organization to sell RNG as a vehicle fuel in the U.S. Sales of its RNG for vehicle fuel increased from 13.0 million gasoline gallon equivalents (GGEs) in 2013 to 237.4 million GGEs in 2025. One GGE is calculated to equal 125,000 British Thermal Units (BTUs), meaning one million BTUs (MMBTU) equals eight GGEs.
