Birchtech Corp. is a provider of specialty activated carbon technologies, offering solutions for air and water purification. The company provides patented and proprietary technologies for mercury emissions capture to the coal-fired utility sector. It is also developing water purification technologies focused on "forever chemicals" such as PFAS and PFOS. For mercury emissions, Birchtech Corp. offers mercury capture solutions for coal-fired power plants using its patented two-part SEA® process. These services aim to achieve mercury emissions removal at a significantly lower cost and with less operational impact to coal-fired power plants compared to other methods. The SEA® process also maintains or increases power plant output and preserves the marketability of byproducts for beneficial use. Birchtech Corp. designs systems and materials specifically tailored for each customer's coal-fired units. North America is currently the largest market for its emissions technologies. The market for mercury removal from power plant emissions in the United States has been largely driven by federal regulations, specifically the MATS rule, which became effective in April 2012. This rule aims to reduce air emissions of heavy metals, including mercury (Hg), from major U.S. power plants burning coal or oil. Birchtech Corp.'s mercury removal technologies and systems achieve mercury removal levels that meet or exceed MATS requirements with lower cost and plant system impacts than typical PAC or BAC sorbent injection systems. Its products are successful across various fuel and system types, are tunable to any configuration, and are environmentally friendly, allowing for the recycling of fly ash for beneficial use. The SEA® technology provides total mercury control based on a scientific understanding of mercury capture in coal-fired flue gas.
