We are a clinical-stage biotechnology company that develops treatments by using the body's natural regulatory systems to stabilize the immune response in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases. We concentrate on conditions where current treatments do not fully meet patient needs and where our experimental drugs could offer significant advantages over existing therapies. Our primary focus is on inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which are chronic conditions involving inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two most common forms of IBD are ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Our main drug candidate, obefazimod, stands apart from other IBD treatments due to its unique mechanism of action. Obefazimod has been shown to specifically increase the expression of a single micro-RNA, miR-124, which is crucial in regulating the inflammatory response. In inflammation, miR-124 naturally controls the progression of inflammation and helps restore balance to the immune system without causing widespread immunosuppression. Unlike some advanced therapies that target only a single cytokine or pathway, miR-124 modulates the expression of several key cytokines and pathways. Modulating multiple inflammatory pathways simultaneously may lead to more lasting efficacy, which is vital for lifelong conditions like IBD, potentially distinguishing obefazimod from current IBD treatments. Our lead drug candidate, obefazimod, is currently in Phase 3 clinical development for treating moderately to severely active UC. We are also continuing to develop obefazimod for CD and are exploring potential combination therapy options in IBD. Additionally, we are expanding our development portfolio by creating follow-on compounds based on our miR-124 platform and evaluating external early drug candidates for IBD. Obefazimod is under evaluation based on induction and maintenance Phase 3 clinical trials.
