HCW Biologics Inc. is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing fusion immunotherapeutics to treat diseases linked to chronic inflammation. The company has created novel compounds intended to treat autoimmune disorders, other proinflammatory diseases, cancer, and senescence-associated dysplasia. HCW Biologics has also started commercializing certain proprietary compounds for use as reagents in producing immunotherapeutics for infectious diseases and cancer. The company's approach targets chronic inflammation, which is believed to contribute to many diseases. This inflammation results from persistent immune cell activation and the buildup of senescent cells, which are non-proliferative but metabolically active. While senescence is a normal physiological process involved in wound healing, tissue maintenance, regeneration, embryogenesis, fibrosis regulation, and tumor suppression, the accumulation of senescent cells with Senescence-Associated Phenotype (SASP) proinflammatory factors is implicated as a major source of chronic sterile inflammation leading to aging-related pathologies. SASP factors, including proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and proteinases, drive an inflammation cycle. Over time, various insults cause normal tissue cells to become senescent, releasing SASP factors that activate immune cells. Prolonged immune cell activation also releases highly proinflammatory cytokines, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation and perpetuating this cycle. Two of the company's proprietary molecules, HCW9201 and HCW9206, are ready for commercial use as reagents in immunotherapeutic treatments.
